Some 63 percent of voters oppose granting driver’s licenses and public benefits such as subsidized child care and unemployment benefits for young illegal immigrants, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

However, 73 percent agree with the new Obama administration policy allowing work permits for those who entered the country before they were 16, have no criminal record and have graduated from high school or served in the military.

Rasmussen Reports found that just 19 percent think they should be deported. President Barack Obama announced the change in policy in June.

The public’s view on young illegals acquiring driver’s licenses and benefits is in line with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s recent announcement that Arizona law bars them from getting driver’s licenses and public benefits. Just 24 percent think the opposite.

Most voters, 53 percent, continue to believe the federal government is not making enough of an effort to identify and deport illegal immigrants, while 15 percent think the government is doing too much.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters nationwide was conducted on August 16-17.
