Chris Christie’s keynote speech at the Republican National Convention failed to give the New Jersey governor any bounce with voters in his home state, a new poll released Wednesday showed.
The Quinnipiac University survey found Christie — whose speech on Tuesday last week was largely overshadowed by the one given by prospective First Lady Ann Romney — still gets a positive job approval rating, but the figures are more or less the same as they were in July.
The poll, taken among 1,560 registered voters in the Garden State, gives Christie a 53 percent approval rating, with 42 percent who do not like the job he is doing. That compares to a 54 to 39 rating in mid-July.
“If Gov. Christopher Christie’s speech marked the opening of a 2016 presidential campaign he might want to try again. People who like the governor liked the speech; those who don’t didn’t. The net result – zero,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Connecticut university’s polling institute.
The survey was conducted from August 27 through September 2. Christie gave his speech on the evening of August 28. It showed men have a much more favorable opinion of Christie than women have.
And it showed that Christie would beat Newark’s Democratic mayor Cory Booker if they go head-to-head for the governorship. He leads by 47 percent to 40. The election is due in November 2013.
