New Jersey voters overwhelmingly approve of Gov. Chris Christie’s job performance — even though they believe he is a bully who would not be a good vice-presidential choice.

A new Quinnipiac University poll finds the Garden State’s pugnacious chief executive has a 54 percent to 39 percent approval rate.

But when voters were asked for the word that best describes Christie, they weren’t so complementary — the most common description of him was “bully,” which was more than two-and-a-half times as popular as the next choice, “arrogant.”

More complimentary choices, such as “tough," “honest," “good,” and “aggressive” followed.

“Gov. Christopher Christie’s squabble on the Seaside boardwalk — shades of Snooki! —underlined his pugnacious ‘Jersey Guy’ image with some voters, who volunteered that he’s a bully. But most of his fellow New Jerseyans call him a leader,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The poll of 1,623 registered voters taken from July 9-15, found that New Jersey wants to keep Christie in Trenton rather than have him move to Washington. They responded 53 percent to 40 percent that Mitt Romney would be making a bad choice if he selects Christie as his running mate.

“Politicians still gossip about the idea, but New Jerseyans think Christie would be a bad choice for VP,” Carroll said. “The governor’s job approval number holds comfortably above 50 percent and voters like him and his policies.”
