Former Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter is in the hospital with a serious illness, friends confirmed on Monday.

One asked that people keep him in thoughts and prayers, Philly.com reports.

Specter, 82, said in 2005 that he had Hodgkin’s disease, for which he underwent chemotherapy. His cancer returned and he was treated again in 2008.

Friends declined to comment on Monday afternoon on the nature of Specter’s illness, Philly.com reports.

Specter was a long-time Republican from Pennsylvania until switching to the Democratic Party in 2009.

His son, Philadelphia attorney Shanin Specter, returned an email query but declined to comment on Specter’s condition.
