More than 14 percent of Americans took food stamps to buy groceries in November, slightly more than in October, as unemployment and stagnant wages continued to weigh down an economic recovery, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The increase reflects a 14.2 percent rise from the same period a year ago.
With 43 million Americans drawing food stamps, Washington, D.C., and Mississippi had more than a fifth of their residents on the subsidy – the highest of any state, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Other states saw year-over-year increases, including New Mexico, Idaho, Florida, Delaware, and Texas.
