Heavy rains in the Northeast have stranded motorists on submerged roads, dumped muddy water into basements and downed power lines.

The flooding closed streets and led to homes being evacuated in New York and New Jersey on Sunday.

In New York, Nassau County police received at least a dozen emergency calls of cars stuck on flooded roads beginning about 9 p.m. Sunday. A section of the Long Island Expressway was closed because of flooding but reopened just after midnight Monday.

In Fort Plain, 45 miles northwest of Albany, authorities issued evacuation orders to nearly 60 homes. A nearby creek overflowed, flooding some streets with up to 5 feet of water.

Umpires called rain delays for professional baseball games in Philadelphia and Boston.

More rain is forecast Monday for northern Pennsylvania, most of New York, northern New Jersey and southern Vermont.
