The Republican National Committee should move the 2012 national convention from Tampa if Florida refuses to move its primary to comply with party rules, South Carolina GOP Chairwoman Karen Floyd said in a letter of complaint. She was quickly joined by Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn, The Washington Post reported.

Florida has set its primary for Jan. 31, violating party rules that say only Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada may hold primaries before March 1.“Simply put, if Florida does not respect the process by which our primary calendar was set, the RNC should not be bound to the process by which the convention site was selected,” Floyd said in the letter according to the Post.

Iowa GOP Party Chairman Matt Strawn said that “if Florida refuses to move its primary date into compliance with RNC rules, that consequence should be the re-opening of the process to select the site of the 2012 RNC Convention.” The convention site was awarded 10 months ago and many preparations have already been made for the August 2012 meeting to nominate a presidential ticket, the Post said.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus has yet to threaten Florida over its actions but has warned them of the rules violation. The RNC can strip states of their delegates to the national convention for rules violations, the Post said.
