NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities have resumed digging up the basement of a Manhattan building in connection with the disappearance 33 years ago of a 6-year-old boy.

The work, which began Thursday, was expected to take up to five days and is starting to wind down.

Investigators are looking for any traces of Etan Patz (AY'-tahn payts). He would have passed the stairwell leading to the basement during his walk to the bus stop from his SoHo apartment.

Authorities say they began the search after an FBI dog indicated the scent of human remains in the room.

The basement was used at the time of the boy's disappearance as a workspace for a handyman named Othniel Miller. He was interviewed after Etan went missing in 1979. He has not been named a suspect.
