Ever since gay couples began flocking to Iowa to wed three years ago, conservative Republicans here have been looking forward to ending the state's status as the only place in the Midwest where gay marriage is legal. But their goal may be slipping out of reach.

Surveys show that Iowans are becoming more accepting of gay marriage. Even voters in conservative districts no longer consider ending gay marriage a top priority, according to Republican organizers.

Conservative leaders say they fear Iowa voters might not approve a referendum banning gay marriage. Nevertheless, GOP leaders say they will propose holding a referendum if they win control of the Legislature in November. Gay marriage was legalized in Iowa by a state court ruling in 2009.
