NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say the leader of the International Monetary Fund has been arrested on charges of criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment after being accused of sexually assaulting a maid at a Manhattan hotel.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested early Sunday, hours after he was plucked from an Air France flight about to leave John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Kahn's attorney didn't immediately return phone or email messages seeking comment.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says Kahn left the hotel Saturday after the 32-year-old maid escaped his luxury suite. The woman told police she entered the suite to clean it, and he emerged naked from the bathroom.

She told police they had a violent struggle, he forced her to perform oral sex and tried to undress her before she broke free and fled. Police say hotel staff notified them of the attack.
