NEW YORK — New York City law enforcers say 111 people have been indicted in an investigation of an identity theft ring with international ties.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and District Attorney Richard Brown said Friday the criminals specialized in counterfeit credit cards.
They said the group was based in New York but had ties to Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
The authorities said bank tellers, store employees and restaurant workers skimmed customers' personal information. The thieves went on shopping sprees with counterfeit credit cards. The high-end goods were later fenced.
