NEW YORK (AP) — Friends and family members of a Portuguese journalist who was slain in New York City have scattered his ashes down a Times Square subway grate.

A funeral was held in Newark, N.J. Saturday for 65-year-old Carlos Castro.

The New York Post and the Daily News reported that Castro's two sisters and a friend then brought his ashes to Times Square and poured them down a subway grate. They said they were carrying out his wishes.

Authorities say Castro was castrated and killed in a Manhattan hotel room on Jan. 7.

Prosecutors say 21-year-old Renato Seabra has confessed to the slaying. Seabra is in custody at Bellevue Hospital.

Friends in New York said Castro and Seabra were a couple. But Seabra's mother told Portugal's TVIndependente television network that her son "was not Carlos Castro's lover."
