New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie says he’s considering pulling the state out of a regional pact that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Garden State is part of the 10-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative that’s based on a cap-and-trade system, the first in the country. Conservatives call it a “cap-and-tax” program.

At a town hall meeting last week, Christie said he’s re-evaluating the state’s participation in the program, the Asbury Park Press reported Tuesday. He said he may not include the program in the new master energy plan for the state.

Christie said neighboring Pennsylvania is not part of the pact, and it could gain a competitive advantage over states that are participating.

"One of the things that we are doing is assessing that program while we are developing a new energy master plan for the state, which we will be ready to announce in the next couple of months," Christie said.

"Is there enough of a benefit to the state to keep it going or is it too much of a detriment on business? And the thing I'm most concerned about is that it doesn't seem to be working in the entire region," Christie added.
