NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City couple faces charges after authorities say they tried to leave their 6-year-old daughter at a police precinct to scare her.

Court papers say Annette Gerhardt took the girl to a Staten Island police precinct on Friday. They say she told police the girl was "uncontrollable."

The papers allege that the girl's father, Gerardo Santiago, who had been waiting in the car, told police that Gerhardt was just trying to scare the girl and teach her a lesson.

The couple were arrested and charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.

The Staten Island district attorney's office said they were arraigned Saturday and released on their own recognizance. They're due in court on March 25.

Gerhardt's lawyer, Matthew Blum, says his client had no intention of abandoning the girl.
