The election of Pope Francis was the work of the Illuminati, according to frenzied Twitter users who claim all signs indicate that the pontiff must be a member of the conspiratorial cult.

The Illuminati is rumored to be an elite organization of influential individuals who mastermind events and takes control of world affairs through governments and corporations. Their symbol is said to be a pyramid or triangle, and they're often represented with the numbers 3, 6, 9, 11, 13, and multiples thereof.

Modern conspiracy theorists argue that today's Illuminati have infiltrated Hollywood, the government, and the church, using top figures' wealth, status, and fame to exert power over the rest of society.

"The number 13 is very significant to the Illuminati. Each group has a core of 39 members which breaks down into 13 times 3 members," Dr. Donald Ryles, an Illuminati conspiracy theorist and author, wrote on his blog. "Thirteen make up an administrative group and then that group answers to a Round Table that consists of nine members. The nine is significant because it relates the triplicate of three that is considered very important in all rituals."

In February, Beyoncé Knowles was accused of having ties to the Illuminati after she flashed a triangle sign with her hands during the Super Bowl halftime performance. Knowles was actually showing support for her husband, rapper Jay-Z, whose record label uses a diamond as its symbol.
