Iran Now Wants US Reparations on Top of Obama Nuke Deal

Unsatisfied with all it got in the nuclear deal with President Barack Obama, Iran now wants the U.S. to pay reparations for a series of events dating back to the 1953 coup that empowered the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, according to the state news agency. 

The Iranian parliament also wants U.S, reparations for victims of the Iran-Iraq war and for more than 17,000 assassinations of Iranians in "terrorist attacks," reported the Tehran Times.

The Iranian parliament passed a bill requiring its government to demand compensation from the United States for "spiritual and material" damages, reported USA Today, and Iran's Supreme National Security Council agreed on Tuesday to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the U.S. Supreme Court's decision last month approving the confiscation of Iranian assets.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-2 in April that Congress had not violated the separation of powers when it voted for a bill that make it easier for 1,300 people to get funds on behalf of those killed or injured in the bombing of a U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut in 1983 and other attacks officials blamed on Iran, according to the Washington Post.

The ruling seemed to move those victims closer to collecting nearly $2 billion in seized Iranian assets, the Post noted.

"According to the bill ratified by the Iranian parliament, the government should take whatsoever steps to sue the U.S. for its role in the 1953 Iranian coup, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup and the Nojeh coup plot," said the Tehran Times.

"The 1953 coup overthrew Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq. Also, the Nojeh coup plot was an aborted attempt to overthrow the newly established Islamic Republic more than 30 years ago," said the Tehran Times.

According to the Kurdish news site Rudaw, Iranian President Hasan Rouhani threatened last week to bring the United States to the International Court at The Hague if Iran's frozen assets were not given back.

"The government will never allow for the money that belongs to the Iranian nation be easily gobbled up by the Americans," Rouhani said.
