Rush Limbaugh skewered CNN’s John King for daring to question Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich about his reported open marriage with ex-wife Marianne and said the attack on the former House speaker backfired.
King, at the beginning of Thursday night's debate in Charleston, S.C., asked Gingrich to speak about the ABC News story on the personal topic. Gingrich’s admonishing and fiery response earned a standing ovation from the crowd.
Limbaugh did a victory dance on his radio show Friday after playing the sound bite on the air.
“It was red meat — people ate it up, standing ‘O’ after standing ‘O’ — two of them in one week,” he said.
Gingrich said the ABC News story “is false,” and that he is “tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans.”
“You cannot shame the mainstream media,” Limbaugh said. “If any of you are thinking that the media learned a lesson, if any of you believe that the media finally had it handed to them . . . forget it. John King is proud of what happened last night. John King is a hero in the mainstream media because he didn’t back down.”
He said the media “chose to hold a guillotine” over Republicans in order to get what they want.
“They delight in their power to destroy candidates that they don’t like,” Limbaugh said. “At the end of the day, the message to every conservative who hasn’t run for office is, you want a piece of this?”
