A new poll shows Democrat Richard Carmona holding a five-point lead over Republican Jeff Flake, a surprising result as Flake is considered the heavy favorite to win the election, according to 3TV in Phoenix.

The poll of 620 likely voters, gives Carmona a 44 percent support to Flake’s 39 percent, while 16 percent remained undecided.

Of those surveyed, 37 percent identified themselves as Republican, 34 percent as Democrats, and 29 percent as independent.

The survey results were released anonymously, the television station reported, by "the authors" of the poll, which was conducted by what the station described as a  “Republican-friendly polling company.” The station said the release was apparently not authorized by the firm for public consumption.

The new survey comes only weeks after another poll found Carmona beginning to move up on Flake, trailing him by a single point.
