New Jersey Democrats and Republican Gov. Chris Christie may be headed for another veto showdown over tax measures following the approval of bills Thursday that did not include an across-the-board income tax cut favored by the governor.
Instead, according to the Bergen County Record, Democratic lawmakers pushed a number of bills through state senate and assembly committees that include property tax relief as well as a so-called “millionaire’s tax” that raises the rates for the state’s highest income earners.
Christie has vetoed a millionaire’s tax passed by Democrats twice before and has vowed to do the same again.
In a statement, he accused Democrats of “holding tax relief hostage,” adding that they are addicted to raising taxes.
Votes on the Democrat’s final $31.7 billion budget plan are expected next week in the full chambers.
