Fans of the cartoon strip “Doonesbury” will notice that cartoonist Gary Trudeau has returned to a favorite topic — Sarah Palin — and the author, Joe McGinniss, who he lampooned for stalking Palin when McGinniss rented a house next to the former Alaska governor to work on his book.

The comic storyline has a fictional reporter for Fox News acquiring an advance of McGinniss’ book and trying to figure out how to spin it for his network, The Washington Post reported.

What’s unusual is that the material from the book is real, the product of an unusual friendship that grew out of the original round of strips in 2010.

Trudeau told the Post that the excerpts in the current round of strips are from the advance edition that the cartoonist received last spring.

McGinniss’ publicist at Random House/Crown said, “I can confirm that Joe did like the 2010 ‘Doonesbury’ cartoons, and [that’s] why his agent reached out to Mr. Trudeau,” the Post reported

McGinniss’ book, “The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin,” is due out Sept. 20th. Trudeau said the 300-page book is “an embarrassment of riches. And, of course, there were revelations that didn’t make the cut because I couldn’t figure out how to make them work as comedy,” the Post reported.
