Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hasn’t decided yet whether she’ll run for president, but if she doesn’t, political observers expect her to endorse Rick Perry. The question is whether such support will help or hurt the Texas governor, The Hill reports.

Perry would have to decide how closely to link himself with Palin, who has proven to be wildly popular with Republican conservatives, but much less popular among the public as a whole.

It would seem Palin’s backing could do nothing but boost Perry in the primaries, as it would shore up his support among the party’s base.

It might also inspire Palin supporters to volunteer for Perry’s campaign, while some of her backers might feel lukewarm or worse about Perry if he doesn’t gain her endorsement.

But for the general election, Perry would need the support of independents and a close alliance with Palin may alienate some of those voters.
