Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has proven to be a thorn in President Barack Obama’s side with his criticism of the president’s policy as insufficiently supportive of Israel.

That might explain why Obama unexpectedly invited Koch to a get-together with bigwigs that a president generally holds during his annual visit to the United Nations in New York City, Politico reports.

Koch won’t be meeting with the president alone, but given that Koch has threatened to campaign against Obama in Florida over his stance toward Israel, surely the president would like to have the former mayor on his side.

Koch’s opposition to Obama’s Mideast policy is said to have played a role in the victory earlier this month of Republican Bob Turner in New York’s Democratic-dominated 9th Congressional District.
