The scrutiny endured during a presidential race is much more intense than that undergone in a gubernatorial contest, says Anita Perry, wife of Republican presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

According to the Des Moines Register, Anita Perry told a breakfast gathering of conservatives in Iowa Wednesday that the tough scrutiny directed at her husband from “the whole country” has been less than comfortable.

“I thought I was pretty seasoned, but I’ve never seen anything like this,” the first lady of Texas was quoted as saying.

“Rick’s been running for office since our son was three years old,” she added. “There is nothing that we have done in the past that we’re ashamed of and we know every little nook and cranny is going to be scrutinized.”

During a question and answer session, Anita Perry also took a swipe at her husband’s GOP rivals.

The Register quoted her as telling the Iowans that the other Republican candidates tried to throw her husband “off message” last week in the Florida debate “because he was leading in the polls.”

“Honestly, I’m going to speak frankly from my heart, I think he takes arrows because they want to knock him out from that position,” she said. “I think that’s why he’s the target.”
