A petition drive calling on New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to invite first responders to the 10th anniversary 9/11 memorial ceremony has drawn nearly 2,000 signatures. The campaign was started when it was learned that family members of the nearly 3,000 killed would be given priority because of limited space.
The New York Daily News reported that police, firefighters, and rescue workers would be asked back to ground zero on another day for a separate ceremony. Space is at a premium this year because construction has filled what had been open space. Lawmakers have also been told their numbers are to be restricted, the paper said.

Jack Dewan, a Boston firefighter and nephew of the late Gerard Dewan, a New York firefighter who died Sept. 11, 2001, launched the petition campaign at
Change.org.
“On the 10th anniversary of September 11th, the first responders who were there that day and survived are not welcome to grieve the loss of their friends and coworkers,” Dewan said.
Dewan, as a family member of a 9/11 victim, has been invited to the ceremony but has refused to attend because other firefighters in his uncle’s ladder company are not invited.
“I will be at the firehouse, where the firefighters continue to do the right thing and carry on the legacy of their friends and co-workers with pride and dignity,” he said.
Change.org is an online organization that pushes for social change on issues from gay and women’s rights to animal welfare, according to its website.
