Just two days before voters go the polls on Election Day, Republican candidate Mitt Romney has opened up a 2 percentage-point lead over President Barack Obama in the NewsmaxZogby Nationwide Tracking Poll.

The two were tied in the 3-day poll completed on Saturday, but the new poll of 1,013 likely voters completed on Sunday shows Romney with 48 percent of the vote and Obama with 46 percent.

“Slowly the popular vote is swinging back to Romney,” says pollster John Zogby. “Will he sustain it for the next few days or will it swing back again?

“Obama is holding on to his base support. Romney is still not performing where he needs to among white voters and evangelicals. But he is now growing his lead to 16 points among investors, and leading by 7 points with men.

“The biggest difference in today's polling is Romney's substantial lead among independents, 48 percent to 34 percent. But today's three-day tracking still has 18 percent of independents as undecided.”

The latest NewsmaxZogby Tracking Polls in three swing states shows Romney narrowing Obama’s lead in Ohio, from 8 points in the earlier poll to 6 points in the latest survey.

Obama is holding on to leads in Virginia and Florida. He’s up by 5 points in Florida, but Zogby cautions: “This is as of Sunday night and there are still undecided voters.”

In Virginia, Obama now has an 8 point lead of the GOP challenger, “but we will still be polling Monday and Tuesday,” Zogby says.

He adds: “Are we looking at a possible split decision on Tuesday? Either candidate can win the close popular vote and lose the Electoral College, even by a landslide. This is so much like 2000 all over again.

“Romney is doing well on the national polling, but has a battle in key swing states. And in those swing states, keep in mind that there are still a substantial number of undecided voters at this late time.”

The NewsmaxZogby poll is a joint venture between Newsmax and New York State-based pollster John Zogby. Tracking polls are being conducted nationally and in Ohio, Florida, and Virginia right up to Election Day.
