Massachusetts GOP state Rep. Dan Winslow says he is mulling whether to run in the election to fill out the Senate term of John Kerry, who is now secretary of state.

Winslow’s decision of whether to join the race comes after Mitt Romney’s son Tagg announced Monday that he’s out.

Republican Gov. William Weld appointed Winslow as a judge in 1995. He left that position to work for Gov. Mitt Romney, heading his legal team. Then after a period in the private sector, Winslow served as Scott Brown’s campaign counsel in his victorious Senate race in 2010, Politico reports.

Winslow just began his second term as state representative, holding the seat formerly occupied by Brown.

“Today I’m taking the necessary steps to form an exploratory committee to test the waters for the U.S. Senate,” Winslow said in a statement Tuesday.

“We need to fix a broken Washington where progress is being hampered by partisan gridlock. If we continue to elect the same Washington politicians, we cannot expect different results.”

Winslow is considering joining a race that better known Republicans are avoiding. Among those staying out of the fray are former Sen. Brown, Tagg Romney and his mother Ann, Weld, and former GOP House candidate Richard Tisei.

Reps. Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch are doing battle in the April 30 Democratic primary. The general election is June 25.
