Allen West: I’m Open to VP Slot

By    |   Friday, 06 April 2012 12:01 PM EDT

Rep. Allen West said Friday he would almost certainly “step up to the plate” if asked to be the Republican vice-presidential nominee.

Both 2008 GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley suggested this week that the Florida congressman would be a good No. 2 on the ticket.

“It’s very humbling,” West said, when asked about the possibility on CNN.

“If someone were to make that call to me, which I really doubt,” West said he would have to first think seriously about it and talk with his wife and daughters, but likely say yes.

West pointed out that his family members have a long and proud tradition of serving their country. His father fought in World War II. He himself spent 22 years in the Army, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and his nephew is now in the Army.

“We have always stepped up to the plate to serve our country,” he said. “We will continue to serve in any capacity, in any way we can.”

Asked whether he would be able to work with Mitt Romney, the front-runner in the GOP presidential race, West told CNN he was confident they could work out any differences.

“We would be able to come together as a team and turn this ship of state around for the United States of America,” he said.
