The Democrats may have raffled off a couple of seats to an overpriced dinner with George Clooney a couple of weeks ago, but, not to be outdone, the GOP has responded with an “opportunity of a lifetime” to dine with the Donald — and Mitt.
The Romney campaign officially launched
dinewiththedonald.com on May 30 amid the hype and sensation that seems to follow billionaire businessman Donald Trump everywhere he goes these days.
“What a spectacular opportunity to dine with two really tremendous individuals — one that is an international icon, and the other the future president of the United States of America,” Michael Cohen, Trump’s executive vice president and spokesperson told Newsmax. “It’s really an opportunity of a lifetime and we suspect that it will raise an enormous amount of money.”
Cohen estimated that the promotion will generate “many millions” of dollars for the Romney campaign.
Trump himself tweeted the following message to his 1.2 million followers on Twitter: “What could be better than dinner with @MittRomney and me?”
Playing off Trump’s popular television show “The Celebrity Apprentice,” the
campaign is offering: “Airport transportation in the Trump vehicle; Stay at the Trump International Hotel & Tower New York; Tour of Trump Tower; Dine with Donald Trump and Mitt Romney.”
Visitors to the
website are greeted by an Uncle Sam-styled illustration of Trump with the message: "I want you: Dine with the Donald & Mitt."
While the site has links to collect donations of between $10 and $2,500, including recurring monthly contributions, there is also an option to enter the contest without making any donation for a chance to win the June 28 dinner in New York.
“The goal is of course to raise as much money as they possibly can by creating excitement for the opportunity to dine with Mr. Trump and Gov. Romney,” added Cohen, who characterized the early response as “immense,” though he said that exact numbers were not available.
