Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, have filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to delay the ban of transgender people from the military from coming into effect, The Hill reported.

President Donald Trump announced in July that transgender people will not be allowed to serve in the U.S. military. Gillibrand announced her intention to push against this order shortly thereafter.

This amendment would push that from taking effect until 60 days after Defense Secretary James Mattis is set to submit his review of the decision to Congress, which must be done sometime before Feb. 21 of next year. The amendment is one of hundreds that have been submitted to the NDAA, making it no guarantee despite the support it may gather in the Senate.

Senate Armed Services Committee chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., decried Trump’s decision as "a step in the wrong direction," last month, according to The Hill.

"The Pentagon's ongoing study on this issue should be completed before any decisions are made with regard to accession," Sen. McCain reportedly said. The Senate Armed Services Committee will continue to conduct oversight on this important issue."
