Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are in a virtual dead heat in Arizona, which holds its primary next Tuesday, according to a new survey from Public Policy Polling. It shows that former Massachusetts Gov. Romney leads former Pennsylvania Sen. Santorum 36 percent to 33 percent among likely Republican voters.

That’s well within the poll’s 4.8 percentage point margin of error, so the two are statistically tied. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich places third with 16 percent support and Texas Rep. Ron Paul fourth with 9 percent.

Poll respondents like Santorum better than Romney, but not by as much as in many other states. Santorum has a favorability spread of 34 percentage points, with 61 percent of respondents holding a favorable view of him and 27 percent an unfavorable view. Romney’s spread is 24 points – 58 percent/34 percent.
