The campaign of de facto Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee (RNC) garnered a combined $40.1 million in donations during April, the campaign announced Thursday.

That number trails the $43.6 million President Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) brought in for the month. But it represents a gain of more than three-fold from Romney’s $12.5 million total for March and counts as his best month of the campaign, The Hill reports.

Romney’s campaign had $61.4 million cash in the bank as of last month.

“We are pleased with the strong support we have received from Americans across the country who are looking for new leadership in the White House,” Spencer Zwick, Romney Victory national finance chairman, said in a statement. “Along with the hard work of the Republican National Committee, we will continue to raise the funds necessary to defeat President Obama in November.”

Romney's campaign said 95 percent of the April donations flowing in to its fund and the RNC amounted to $250 or less. Those donations totaled $10.1 million. That means the bulk of the $40 million came from large donations.

“Voters are tired of President Obama’s broken promises,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said Thursday. “Mitt Romney has the record and plan to turn our country around. That is why he is receiving such enthusiastic support from voters across the country."

Romney commenced joint fundraising efforts with the RNC last month. He also benefited from the April withdrawal of his main challenger, Rick Santorum, which left Romney as the nominee-to-be.
