Texas Democratic Rep. Charlie Gonzalez slammed Mitt Romney Tuesday for failing to provide leadership on immigration issues, as the Republican presidential front-runner prepared to make a fundraising swing through the state this week.
According to the
Houston Chronicle, Gonzalez criticized Romney in a teleconference call with reporters organized by the Democratic National Committee ahead of Romney stops in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
Gonzalez, who represents most of San Antonio, reportedly lashed out at Romney for not providing any realistic measures of his own, while accusing President Barack Obama of failing to enforce immigration laws and secure the Southwest border with Mexico.
“That’s not leadership. That does not bring the country together,” Gonzalez said.
Romney has vowed to veto Obama’s DREAM Act, an immigration reform proposal that would create paths to citizenship for minors in the country illegally.
In addition, Romney has called for tougher enforcement of existing laws, which he contends would force many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States to leave on their own or “self-deport.”
