Now that Mitt Romney is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, his camp is working hard to coordinate political strategy with GOP leaders in Congress.

Romney campaign officials will maintain close contact with House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, other GOP heavyweights, and some rank-and-file congressmen who supported the former Massachusetts governor from the beginning, Roll Call reports.

The Romney campaign is eager to open the lines of communication with these Republican heavyweights, given that it had to wait until Romney’s rival Rick Santorum exited the race last week to embark on the coordination effort.

The ultimate goal is for Romney and Republicans in Congress to be ready to hit the ground running on legislative issues in 2013 after a hopeful Romney victory, says Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, vice chairman of the GOP Conference and Romney’s top liaison in Congress.

“I’m trying to work to see that people involved in the campaign develop relationships with members of the House and Senate — and particularly senior staff,” Blunt told Roll Call. “It will be very helpful if there’s a Romney administration.”

On the Romney campaign side, Policy Director Lanhee Chen and Political Director Rich Beeson will likely play central roles in the effort.
