Rick Perry has an unlikely fan in actor Russell Crowe, as the pair has grown close over the years, reports Politico
“I like [Perry] very much as a bloke,” the Australian actor told the Houston Chronicle back in 2003.
Crowe, an Australian citizen who can’t vote in or contribute to U.S. campaigns, explained that he was thankful for Perry’s help in the late 1990s when he was serving as lieutenant governor of Texas.
Crowe and his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts received “a great deal of help in getting the visas we needed” from Perry when the band went to record an album in Texas.
Perry first met Crowe when he was the agriculture commissioner in Texas in the ‘90s and was approached by Crowe’s brother about an agricultural project.
“The governor met Crowe, who has a ranch in Australia, and they talked about farming and ranching, and they developed a friendship that has continued over the years,” a spokesperson for Perry told the Austin American-Statesman in 2003.
The unlikely duos friendship continues to blossom with Perry naming Crowe an honorary Texan in 2000.
