Democrat Ralph Northam, who is running for Virginia governor, is fighting back after being slammed by President Donald Trump in a Thursday tweet.
Trump had tweeted his support of Northam's Republican opponent Ed Gillespie earlier in the day, while calling Northam, Virginia's lieutenant governor, "very weak on crime."
But Northam, a neurologist, took to Twitter to respond directly to Trump, and pointed out his own work treating those at a Remote Area Medical clinic.
And in earlier tweet, he noted:
The Washington Post reported there is continued speculation about whether Trump will hit the campaign trail on behalf of Gillespie before the Nov. 7 election.
Virginia was the only southern state to go for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, the newspaper noted.
