President Donald Trump on Monday said Puerto Rico, ravaged by a Category 4 hurricane last week, is in "deep trouble" and suffering from broken infrastructure and massive debt.

The U.S. has ramped up its response to the humanitarian crisis on the island following blunt criticism the Trump administration was not doing enough. Many of the 3.4 million U.S. citizens in the territory are still without adequate food, water, and fuel, and flights off the island have been infrequent.
