The GOP primary process includes too many debates and needs tighter controls — things that must be changed in future elections, according to Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee.

I absolutely think we need to limit debates,” Priebus told Newsmax TV.

“More importantly though, we need to decide who the moderators are going to be, we need to decide what networks and what agencies and what groups and what media outlets are going to administer the debates.”

Story continues below the video.

Priebus said he has “pretty broad support” to adopt a schedule that “actually ties the nomination of the presidency to the debate calendar. In my opinion that’s one of the only ways that we can actually control the debate.”

The issue of “winner-take-all” states must also be clarified as the GOP picks its nominee, according to Priebus.

He recalled how, when Rick Santorum was weighing whether he should stay in the race, that one question was whether Texas was a proportional or winner-take-all state.

“I would argue that if Texas was a winner-take-all state as opposed to a proportional, perhaps Rick Santorum would have stayed,” Priebus said.

“I would also tell you that Mitt Romney was picking up delegates throughout the South at a time where he was losing those states but he was picking up delegates because of the proportionality rule.

“So I don’t think the conventional wisdom there is well settled as well as whether proportionality or winner-take-all extended the primary or shortened it.”
