Will she, or will he?

That is the latest question being bandied about regarding who exactly is the Democratic frontrunner for president in 2016: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The long-presumed answer has been Clinton, as a recent saturation of media coverage around her would seem to reinforce.

But in the past month, a media blitz has led many to speculate as to whether Emanuel, President Obama’s former Chief of Staff, was prepping for his own run for the White House.

The New York Post threw more gasoline onto that fire Thursday by offering two new theories surrounding Clinton and Emanuel in a an item by columnist Richard Johnson.

The first: “Buzz at the Conservative Political Action Conference is that Hillary Clinton might not be running for president in 2016 — and might instead be a placeholder for Rahm, who was President Obama’s chief of staff before he ran for mayor.”

The second: “Another theory: Rahm will be Hillary’s running mate on a Clinton-Emanuel ticket.”

Clinton has not yet declared her intent to try to become the nation’s first woman president.

Nevertheless, a shadow campaign is already in high gear with the super PAC, Ready for Hillary, recently getting a website makeover.

As for his own aspirations, Emanuel seemed to squash the thought of attempting to become the first Jewish president with a 2016 run, saying in a February Financial Times profile. “I am done in this job. I am done. Period. I have achieved my lifetime’s ambition.”

In the same story, former White House senior adviser David Axelrod said he believes Emanuel when he says he has no presidential aspirations.

“I have never heard Rahm say he wants to be president,” Axelrod said.
