On the same day he was promoted to serve as Donald Trump's campaign chairman, Paul Manafort said Thursday that Trump can change his tone and behavior.
Trump's "behavior can be changed," Manafort reportedly told a group of GOP operatives, campaign veterans, and congressional aides, according to
Politico.
The meeting took place at the Washington, D.C. office of international law firm Jones Day on Capitol Hill.
Manafort, who was hired by the Trump campaign two months ago as convention manager but has since been promoted to campaign chairman and chief strategist, tried to reassure the Republicans in the room that Trump can win the general election and become president.
Manafort, according to Politico sources, said Ronald Reagan was initially criticized by his own party before he won the presidency. And Trump will strive to earn votes from Latinos and Hispanics despite his past comments about illegal immigration, he said.
Further, Manafort told the group the Trump campaign "can't wait to exploit" certain things about Democrat Hillary Clinton during the general election campaign.
Manafort added that "Donald Trump is in charge" when asked about who is leading the campaign's vice presidential search.
Two Trump staffers, meanwhile, were spotted in New York City having an argument about an apparent campaign disagreement Wednesday night. Spokeswoman Hope Hicks and campaign manager Corey Lewandowski had a yelling match on a Manhattan street,
the New York Post's Page Six reported.
