Paul Manafort's notes from a controversial Trump Tower meeting with Russians last summer included the word "donations" near a reference to the Republican National Committee, NBC News reported.

The notes, which were taken on a smart phone and were "cryptic," an unnamed source told NBC News, are in the possession of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees as well as special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, NBC News reported.

It is illegal for foreigners to donate to American elections.

A spokesman for Manafort told Axios, "It is 100 percent false to suggest this meeting included any discussion of donations from Russian sources to either the Trump campaign or the Republican Party."

Mueller is also scrutinizing the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, which was hosted by President Donald Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., and was attended by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, along with Manafort, who was the Trump campaign manager at the time, NBC News reported.

According to NBC News, Mueller's investigators want to know what Trump knew about the meeting and whether he sought to conceal its purpose.
