"The elite media" loves its approval ratings stories that detail how President Donald Trump's presidency is going to hell, but it's all "nonsense," Newt Gingrich wrote in a column for Fox News.
For one, the media fails to mention that President Ronald Reagan had similarly low approval ratings at the same point in his presidency, Gingrich noted.
"Reagan bounced back, carried 49 states in a landslide re-election, and went on to oversee an economic boom and change world history by pushing the Soviet Union into collapse," Gingrich wrote.
Second, Trump has a lot of company from other world leaders with approval ratings in the 30s:
- France's Emmanuel Macron – 36 percent.
- Britain's Theresa May – 34 percent.
- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe – 34 percent.
- Democratic Party – 38 percent.
"All of these approval ratings are lower than President Trump's — but you don't see the elite media fighting to break that news story," Gingrich wrote for Fox News.
"So, the next time you watch biased and uninformed TV pundits opine on President Trump's approval ratings, remember two things: President Reagan's 49 state re-election victory in 1984 and the current ratings of other world leaders," Gingrich wrote.
"Then relax and enjoy the nonsense knowing it is just that: nonsense."
