Tax cuts are the top priority for GOP Young Gun Nan Hayworth.

“Broad-based tax relief,” she said without hesitation when Newsmax Senior Editor David Patten asked about priorities, “and I’m hopeful that the (Bush tax cuts) will be extended permanently in the lame duck session. It might happen, but if not that will be our first priority” when the 112th Congress convenes in January.

Hayworth, who took back a traditional Republican seat in New York’s 19th Congressional District with the backing of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, said her constituents also want to see the economy revive and want the government off their backs.

The doctor and Princeton graduate did not see the partisan divides, whether within the Republican or Democratic parties or between them, as being insurmountable.

“The idea is that we share far more than might divide us, and that’s what is going to carry us forward,” she said. “And again, I have every confidence in the House Republican leadership that is coming in. These are extraordinary men and women, and I am sure that they will unite us in ways that will be constructive and in ways that will not be partisan but allow us to cooperate with our Democratic colleagues who, I am sure, have also heard the results of this election and understand we do need to take another approach.”
