An internal poll by the Richard Mourdock campaign shows him edging out long-time Sen. Dick Lugar, R-Ind., in his bid to win the Republican nomination. The poll shows the state treasurer with a 42 to 41 percent lead among likely GOP primary voters.

“These poll results confirm what I have been hearing on the campaign trail for that past several months,” Mourdock said. “After 36 years, Republican Primary voters believe Senator Lugar is out of touch with their concerns and ready to elect a true conservative to the U.S. Senate.”

Lugar has not had a primary challenger since he first won election in 1976. A Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll last month showed him with a 7 point lead in the primary to be held May 8th.
