Mitt Romney's older brother plans to run for a Michigan Senate seat being vacated by incumbent Carl Levin next year.

A state GOP official told the Associated Press Friday that Scott Romney, 71, has been discussing his options with potential supporters.

The older Romney has not had a successful political run in the past. He lost the 1998 nomination for state attorney general at the Michigan Republican convention.

Ironically, one of his ex-wives, Ronna, ran for Senate in 1996 but lost to Levin, who first took office 34 years ago.

Scott Romney is on the board of Michigan State University's law school.
