Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Sunday heaped praise on President Donald Trump for changes he’s made “unrelated to legislation” – and disputed rancor between the White House and Congress, declaring “the president's agenda and our agenda are one and the same.”
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the Kentucky Republican said the GOP has “been waiting for the opportunity” to enact tax reform and Trump’s election and a Republican majority “give us an opportunity to accomplish something really important for the country, to get it growing again.”
“ I don't think president has been given nearly enough credit… for the other things that he's doing to get the country growing again, and that s changing the people on these boards and commissions that have such a pervasive impact on growth in this country,” he said, ticking off his proposed appointments to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Communications Commission and the Food and Drug Administration among others — as well as his appointment of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch.
“President Trump doesn't get nearly enough credit for the changes that he's brought about that are unrelated to legislation,” he declared.
He also dismissed the apparent friction between Congress and Trump.
“What we’re interested in is achieving an agenda for the American people, and the president's agenda and our agenda are one in the same,” he said. “We're thrilled to have somebody in the White House who supports what this House and Senate Republican majority has been wanting to have an opportunity to do for a long time.”
