Florida gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum has won the endorsement of the Christian Family Coalition in his campaign against Rick Scott for the Republican nomination.

“I am proud to stand with Bill McCollum in Florida’s Republican primary for governor,” Anthony Verdugo, executive director of the Christian Family Coalition, said in a statement reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

“Bill McCollum is a common sense social and fiscal conservative in both his public and personal life.

“Florida is in need of strong leadership and I am confident Bill McCollum will lead our state with dignity and integrity.”

The Florida-based Christian Family Coalition works to introduce pro-family legislation at the state and local levels of government.

McCollum’s primary opponent, Rick Scott, has come under fire from pro-family and pro-life groups because the hospital chain he founded and headed as CEO, Columbia/HCA, performed and profited from abortion services.

Other family values conservatives who have lined up solidly behind McCollum include Phyllis Schlafly, president and founder of the conservative grass-roots public policy organization Eagle Forum, and Gary Bauer of the Campaign for Working Families.

“Grass-roots leaders in virtually every region of the state are supporting Bill McCollum and the numbers are growing daily,” according to a statement from the statewide co-chairmen of Social Conservatives for Bill McCollum — John Stemberger, chairman of the Florida Family Action-PAC, and Dennis Baxley, former executive director of the Christian Coalition.
