Former GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned on Wednesday for Indiana candidate Richard Mourdock amid an ever-tightening race for the U.S. Senate.

“We like him. I got to know him through (Republican Indiana Sen.) Dan Coats,” McCain told a group of local veterans, The Indianapolis Star reports. “I appreciate the fact that he’s a fiscal conservative. I think he could play a big role as we avoid this fiscal cliff, given his background as a state treasurer. We think he’s very qualified to hit the country running.”

Mourdock, the state treasurer, is in a dead heat against Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly.

McCain had supported Mourdock’s opponent in the primary, Sen. Richard Lugar, even airing ads in support of the incumbent, The Star reports.

But McCain said that he now knows Mourdock better and believes that his victory is crucial to a Republican majority in the Senate, The Star reports.

Meanwhile, Graham met with local business leaders, praising Mourdock’s fiscal acumen and saying he could help Republicans create a budget plan – something the Democratic-controlled Senate has not done since 2009.
