This fall Maryland voters are likely to decide whether the state will provide tuition breaks for illegal immigrants and allow same sex marriage. The two issues will also reveal just how liberal the blue state really is, The Washington Post reported.

Opponents of same-sex marriage, which was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Gov. Martin O’Malley, D-Md., have begun efforts to place the measure on the ballot. Opponents of Maryland’s version of the Dream Act have already secured a place on the ballot.

Should voters approve both measures, it would place Maryland among the nation’s most liberal states. “All of these taken together, it will tell us what Maryland is evolving into — meaning, we may not be the Maryland that we once were or that we thought we still were,” state Democratic Sen. Anthony Muse told the Post. “It will redefine us.”

Polling gives a mixed picture on same sex-marriage. A recent Washington Post poll found that while 71 percent of white Democrats support same-sex marriage, just 41 percent of blacks do. A number of black ministers have vowed to help repeal the measure and two black Democratic lawmakers joined forces with Maryland Republicans to launch a signature-gathering drive to place the measure on the fall ballot, the Post reported.
