Hillary Clinton on Sunday called on the Trump administration to "send the Navy, including the USNS Comfort" to Puerto Rico to assist Hurricane Maria survivors.
"These are American citizens," she tweeted.
Clinton was responding to a tweet sent out by a photojournalist showing the island in chaos following the catastrophic damage caused by the Category 5 storm. Puerto Rico is still reeling and is entirely without power, with government officials estimating weeks, maybe months, for the return of electricity. Many who stayed behind also don't have access to gasoline, food or water.
Trump's recent silence on Puerto Rico has social media stirring, but White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the administration was handling the situation.
"When it comes to Puerto Rico, the president has sent both (Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator (Brock) Long and senior adviser to Department of Homeland Security Tom Bossert today. They're on the ground to assess the damage," she said. "We've done unprecedented movement in terms of federal funding to provide for the people of Puerto Rico and others that have been impacted by these storms, we'll continue to do so and continue to do everything that we can possibly under the federal government to provide assistance."
