South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley — who wowed this year’s Republican National Convention with a rousing speech — still has an image problem among voters in her home state.

A new Winthrop University poll reveals only 38.3 percent approve of her job performance over the past two years while 41.3 percent disapprove of the work she’s doing.

And while her approval rating is actually up, it’s not by much. A year ago, 34.6 percent gave her high marks.

Haley has had her share of controversy in the past year.

She was slammed over a sweeping hacking scandal in which cyber-thieves broke into the South Carolina Department of Revenue’s computers and stole the classified financial information of more than 6 million individuals and businesses.

Last June, the House Ethics Committee cleared Haley of charges that she had illegally lobbied while a member of the House.

The poll, reported in The State newspaper, does have some good news for the governor along party lines. Her job approval among registered Republican voters stands at 61.5 percent.

Also getting a pat on the back is the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature. Some 38 percent of those polled approve of the legislature’s work, compared to 33 percent who don’t.

But the majority of voters in the Palmetto State are pessimistic about their state’s future, with 42 percent saying South Carolina is headed the wrong way versus 40 percent who think things are going well .

The poll of 929 respondents was conducted from Nov. 25 through Dec. 2 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
